Business turnaround strategy for a state-owned telecom operator

Background

  • The client is a major state-owned telecom operator in Thailand whose majority of revenue has come from telecom concession
  • The concession period is going to expire putting the company in a difficult situation while having high operating expenditures
  • Other than concession, the main business relies heavily on traditional fixed-line connectivity which has had a price decline and been replaced by other technologies in the past years

Role and methodology

  • Internal analysis of financial situation, competitive advantage e.g. existing infrastructure and coverage, well-targeted customer segments, work process and organization structure
  • External analysis of potential telecom sub-sectors, local & regional competition, and practices of leading global operators
  • Conduct workshops with client cross-functional management and develop strategies, action plans with prioritization and target setting

Project outcome

  • Strategies and action plans which focus on two aspects (i) short and medium term requirement, and (ii) long term sustainability
  • The short and medium term focuses on utilizing existing competitive advantages of infrastructure through collaboration with fast growing private sectors
  • The long term focuses on developing new value-added services (with higher margin) in addition to existing assets
